Golden Rules for Coffee Making

Rule 1
Coffee should be as hot as possible when served; therefore, it is good practice to warm the coffee pot. When serving espresso or an espresso-based drink, the cups should also be warmed.

Rule 2
With the exception of Arabic coffee, no coffee should be made with boiling water as it scorches very easily, producing a bitter flavour. Either boil the kettle and let it stand for about 30 seconds to go off the boil, or try to switch off the kettle just before it bubbles. The benefit of electric coffee makers is that it will heat the water to optimum temperature for coffee, without the boil.

Rule 3
Coffee should never be reheated. Although it will still be drinkable after reheating, bear in mind that the flavour changes dramatically. Coffee will keep hot in a better condition if placed in a warmed vacuum flask.

Rule 4
The true coffee connoisseurs or the coffee purists are adamant that filtered or bottled water should be used for the best cup of coffee, instead of tap water.

Rule 5
The most important part of brewing the perfect cup of coffee is to use the correct amount of coffee. A good rule of thumb is to use to 2 level teaspoons of ground coffee for each 6 fl oz. (3/4 cup). However, the best is to follow the manufacturers’ directions.
